It's been bothering me or a long time. The photographs of the Coats House Hotel from the 19th century don't look like the building that's there now. I'm not talking about the Southern half that burned on January 28, 1978. The structure in the 19th century images has a top floor with a mansard roof. The modern structure has turrets and bay windows. I didn't see how they could possibly be the same building, but the text accompanying any photographs treats them as the same building. Then last week I found this photograph on Missouri Valley Special Collection website. It shows both building's side by side.

It appears the older, original portion (the north wing-1868) of the Coates House is still there--underneath.
Around 1889-1890, work began building the newer south wing (the Victorian structure). After completion, work began remodeling the original French-Empire-styled building to match the new Victorian structure.
A new facade, bay windows, a portico, two additional full floors, and cupolas were added to the original 1868 structure.
So after the 1978 fire destroyed the south wing, the remaining building today is the original structure, but just with a facadectomy of sorts.
My earlier post didn't link up to my AIM account, so I just wanted to identify myself and leave an email address.
